A highly experienced film and television lawyer with an extensive background in both finance and production, Stephen advises major financiers and leading independent production companies. He is praised by clients for his in-depth sector knowledge, unique practical experience and excellent negotiating skills.
As a partner in the firm’s Film & TV group, Stephen advises a wide range of clients on the structuring and completion of complex financing arrangements for film and television productions. In addition to acting for financiers, Stephen represents international film and television production companies on all aspects of the development, production and distribution of feature films and television series.
Having read law at Oxford, Stephen qualified as a lawyer in Slaughter and May’s corporate finance team. He then chose to pursue his passion for film, by establishing and running an independent film finance and production company, alongside a separate vehicle which focussed on the development of content in collaboration with some of the UK’s leading production companies. Stephen also consulted for Ingenious Media, acting as advisor and lead lawyer on many of the company’s film and television transactions.
Stephen has acted as Executive Producer on numerous feature films, including Netflix drama “Worth” starring Michael Keaton, Amazon biopic “Seberg” starring Kristen Stewart, Gurinder Chadha’s “Blinded by The Light”, “SAS: Red Notice” based on the novel by Andy McNab, “Military Wives” featuring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, “Minamata” starring Johnny Depp, and John Banville’s adaptation of his own Booker Prize winning novel, “The Sea”.
